UAC is old news but those of you moving to Win7 might not know much about its roots– history, philosophy, & internals.   The UAC redefines user mode and how we interact with the PC.  It’s a collection of technologies including file system virtualization, protected administrator (PA) account, elevation prompts, integrity levels, & a revamped logon architecture.  Perhaps you recollect the notorious MAC ads and gave it a chuckle.  In the words of Microsoft, “The prompts are NOT the feature.”  To learn the real story, check out these articles below.  These links give actual intelligent insight and even criticism of the UAC– they’ll help you understand the WHY as wells as the HOW behind this effective (and controversial) security mechanism in Windows 7.

And this one has quickly become one of my all time favorites!   Simple, to the point, and useful.  Hey folks!  If you’re taking an advanced w7 exam (such as 70-685 or 70-686) then you need to know how to troubleshoot GPOs.  And after you look this over, tour the other posts.   The GP blog is full of great information.

I’ve been a fan of Mark Minasi since I started in this industry about 12 years ago.  One of my first books was an A+ book and Win2000 Server book.  His sense of humor and ease of language made it actually fun to read about disk quotas, defrag, and other not-so-compelling material.

His latest newsletter is a tribute to LTI migration from XP to Windows 7.  If you have no idea what LTI is, then you definitely should read it!  It comes with pictures!   Enjoy!

PS. Thanks Mark for elevating the dull-and-boring to new heights and enlightening the masses!

Oh, the joy of deployment whitepapers, fresh from a laser-write!  All those  letters chained together like a steam-train pounding toward my cerebellum!  Oh, the power of Windows 7 deployment technologies– if the WAIK had a smell it would smell of metal and diesel and raw horsepower.  I feel light headed and giddy!

Enjoy the trip:

A new whitepaper from Jeremy Chapman– one of Microsoft’s spokesmen for application compatibility and deployment technologies.

Here’s the overview:

In this article, Jeremy Chapman, a senior product manager at Microsoft, documents the high-level steps for IT professionals to perform an enterprise-scale desktop deployment project—starting with Windows XP and moving to Windows 7.

The Infrastructure Optimization Model is an organizational paradigm and metric for IT practices.  You can take an assessment that will categorize your IT group as either “Basic, Standard, Rationalized, or Dynamic”.   A Basic IT group is one that is more REACTIVE and “fights fires” whereas a Rationalized\Dynamic group enables business and relies on automation.  Such paradigms can be useful when you want to compare IT services and when you are considering an investment in automation.

A great walkthrough to get you started with deploying Windows 7 using VHDs.    Here’s an excerpt  to get you started:

This walkthrough describes how to create and configure a virtual hard disk (VHD) running Windows® 7 for native boot. A native-boot VHD is a virtual hard disk that can be used as the running operating system on designated hardware without any other parent operating system. This is in contrast to a scenario where a VHD is connected to a virtual machine on a computer with a parent operating system.

In this release, VHDs can be applied to computers that have no other installations of Windows, for usage as a native-boot VHD, without a virtual machine or hypervisor. (A hypervisor is a layer of software below the operating system that runs virtual computers.) This allows for greater flexibility in workload distribution in that a single set of tools can be used to manage images for virtual machines and designated hardware.
