Here’s a chart I created based on information in the Windows 7 Resource Kit. It identifies the differences between Thin, Thick, & Hybrid images as it relates to application deployments.

Windows 7′s version of WAIK includes a new tool called DISM (which either stands for Da Installation-tool-with-lots-of Stuff! Muha ha ha or something else). DISM enables you to do some pretty cool things with your images- both offline and ONLINE! It’s the swiss army knife of deployment tools and I’ve included here some useful posts and documentation– lots of how2 and examples! So git bizzy with DISM!
- windowsteamblog – I’d start with this one!
- blog from a guy named brian - nice walkthroughs
- technet - technically, this is the technical reference
- windowsnetworking.com
- daniel’s world – daniel’s world

Here’s a link to an application compatibility portal: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/aa904987.aspx
This link includes a 60+ minute webcast on appcompat issues as well as the appcompat cook books.
For information on deploying DCP packages for ACT, look here. Handy step by step!

A couple of useful videos on appcompat.
This one for W7 and this old one for Vista but still really really interesting (featuring Chris Jackson).

When planning a W7 or 08 deployment, key questions arise such as:
- How many systems are present?
- What hardware is currently installed?
- What hardware is recommended for W7 or 08?
- How many systems are ready for W7 and how many will need hardware upgrades?
- What OS’s and apps are currently installed including anti-virus and firewall products?
- Will my environment benefit from virtualization?
Microsoft Assessment & Planning Toolkit is a tool \ aid that will help YOU answer these questions and plan your W7 launch.
It has the following key benefits:
- Inventory
- Assessment
- Reporting
It’s a sleuthing tool that reports back the ready-state of potential W7 clients. More information can be found here.
You can download it here. Sample reports and more information can be found here.
