An important clarification and learning point when working with Windows is the distinction between User Rights and NTFS\Share\Application Permissions. If you come from the Novell world, Rights and Permissions are pretty much the same thing- Not in Windows! Rights are essentially system-wide privileges assigned primarily through policies. Permissions, on the other hand, are associated with a resource such as a file or printer. I’d like to share more about this topic but the real reason for this post is to point you to this great article on Windows privileges. I like the author’s analogy and explanation of the Whoami tool.
