quick shutdown in Windows 7 June 28, 2010

I have always been a fan of keyboard shortcuts.  One I used extensively in XP was “Windows Key” then “U” for Shutdown.  Now, in 7, this starts an instant search for all things “U” like.  Not helpfUl if you’re trying to shUtdown the machine!

The new 7 way is to “Windows Key” then Right-Arrow then Enter.   That changes your focus to the Shutdown options in the Start Menu.

If your Shutdown doesn’t say Shutdown, or if you want to change your options to say “Logoff” instead, use the Start Menu options.  Right-click your taskbar and go to Properties.  The Start Menu has a tab for this kind of customization.

Speaking of the Windows Key, I just learned that Windows Plus the numbers 1-9 will launch or toggle to items in the tabbar. I love this feature!

Another component I find myself missing when I switch to XP is the ability to grab a maximized window and drag it to another screen. All this restoring and maximizing gets old!
